ABOUT USFA MEMBERSHIP
All fencers at Concord Fencing Club must
join the United States Fencing Association.
This includes Homeschoolers and
Women's Fencing Group.
USFA provides insurance to protect the fencer and all connected
with the sport. In addition to insurance, the USFA provides a quarterly
newsletter and "American Fencing"
Magazine. This is where you can find all the latest info on rules, technique,
equipment, nutrition, competitions, sports medicine, parent's issues and more.
Membership to USFA is required for almost all competitions. Cost is $50
per year.
(There IS a "family discount" for multiple family members)
The fencing season runs from 08/01 - 07/31 of the calendar year, so you can see that
the cost is very low, about 10 cents per day.

Foiled by how to get or stay in shape?
Fencing is a great
workout.
Fencing is ideal for firming up a woman’s body. While fencing is a
total body workout, it exercises the thighs, hips and bottom
hardest of all.
Bond girl, Rosamund
Pike (‘Die Another Day’) said: "I found fencing scenes excellent for
firming up my thighs." If you’re looking to receive more compliments
like the ones that Jennifer Lopez receives, fencing is one of your
best exercise options. Why? Fencing requires lunges, that force
the legs to work hard and become stronger than nearly any other sport.
Quick movements insure a fast paced, aerobic workout that burns 390
calories per hour.
Gear rental
cost is included in the class fee.
A good fencer is graceful, aggressive, strategic and strong. What
other sports feature this combination?
Fencing is a martial art and is ideal for relieving stress. Yes, it’s
one of those great sports where you get to hit stuff; seriously
though, you’ll be surprised how life’s stresses move to the background
as you focus on out-thinking your opponent and making that "touch".
Grab a T-shirt and
sweatpants, and join other women in a 1 Hour 15 min, progressively
paced class designed to teach you the basics of Foil Fencing - all
while getting that great workout and having FUN !

This class aims to nurture and develop the fencing athlete. Here the emphasis is
placed on bringing together all that has been learned and then refine it even
more. The student will master the competitive nature within themselves. It will
increase the level of competitive competence of all students. This class is
designed to acclimate the student to the rigors of competitive fencing and
prepare them for success on the highest level.
The emphasis is
simply competition - whether fencing Foil, Epee or Sabre. Students are
expected to be in regular competition - at the Divisional or National
level, or both. As such, time will be devoted to identifying for each
Competition Group member, those competitive events for which he/she is best
qualified. This will include implementing goal-setting , mental skills
preparation and conditioning cycle planning so each member is equipped to
perform at his or her peak level.
Students will
learn to plan all facets of travel competition; and when applicable,
travel arrangements, coaching at events, lodging and all details of travel will
be coordinated as a group.
Students will
be expected to approach competition from a learning perspective, and as
developing athletes, be prepared to self-evaluate their performance, and share
with other groups members their competition experience - both obstacles and
triumphs.
While
organized instruction is kept to a minimum, there are regular sessions
set aside for such topics as:
►Sports
Psychology/Competitive Mental Skills Training
►Competition
Tactics and Strategy
►Stretching,
Conditioning and Injury Avoidance
►Electronic
Weapon Maintenance and Repair
►Timing,
Scoring and Officiating
Monthly
in-class seminars will address athlete health topic such as nutrition,
hydration, cross-training and high-level competition fitness.

Individual lessons are an
effective way to develop your fencing skills. Spending quality time one-on-on
with an instructor is especially valuable in an individual sport like
fencing.
Gear rental cost is included in the lesson fee.
A
fencing lesson is designed to introduce new techniques, and re-enforce proper
execution of fencing actions already in the student's repertoire. The goal of
the lesson is not to replicate bouting conditions, but rather to provide an
environment that allows for controlled repetitions of a selected technique.
After mastering the technical action, the instructor prompts the student
through a variety of scenarios. The student is responsible for choosing, and
executing, the correct actions, depending on the tactical situation. It is
because of this complex process that many fencing techniques can flourish
within an individual lesson format.
Each lesson is tailored to the
individual ability of the student, and is adapted to the pupil's learning
style. During a lesson, students should expect to be challenged, but students
will not be asked to perform beyond their capability. The lesson can be
physically demanding, and will last approximately 20 minutes.*
Students who plan on taking an
individual lesson, should arrive 30 minutes prior to their scheduled lesson
time. When the lesson begins the student is expected to have completed a
warm-up/stretching session (on their own) and worked a few hits against the
padded target boards. This helps to ensure that the student is physically
ready to begin their lesson.
Fencers of all levels can
benefit from the individual instruction time, and competitively minded
students should consider taking an individual lesson now and again to work on
specific skills and sequences.

*Longer
lessons can be arranged, but in general the quality of the exercise

ABOUT MULTIPLE
FAMILY MEMBER CLASS DISCOUNTS
Some things DON'T change...
Concord Fencing Club realizes that activity fees for
several children can add up quickly. That is why we will maintain our
policy of discounting the total CLASS fees for families with multiple
fencers (in addition to providing a discount to those advancing fencers
who are club members and decide to pursue a second class or weapon group),
The "Family Discount" is applied to the total CLASS fee
AFTER other applicable discounts are applied.
We are happy to assist you, and answer ANY questions !
